Abby was very pleased with her gift from mom and dad...a new Care-Bear blankie. Joseph and I stayed up until 3 a.m. tying the quilt, but it would have been 5 a.m. if Sara and Grandma hadn't helped us get started. Thanks ladies! Grandma Rowene did the binding while we packed our bags to go home. This gift was truly a whole family effort and her favorite gift of Christmas.
I think Brynn was looking to see if any of the piles had what she REALLY wanted in them. After seeing what Santa left, she said, "Are there any more presents." You see, what she REALLY wanted was something she had had her eye on for the last few weeks. When I saw it I said, "We are absolutely not buying that!" Joseph told me, 'We absolutely are buying it!" Brynn asked Santa for it, but Joseph told Santa that he wanted to take the credit for getting her what she really wanted. Santa agreed to let her dad and mom take the credit and we took care of the thing Brynn wanted the most this Christmas....we put the present in a Target bag before we wrapped it to throw her off, because she knew it didn't come from Target. I must admit, it was delightsome to see her face and her excitement when she discovered what was inside.....

A soft and furry brown coat that she saw at Marshall's and fell in love with! I must confess that, while I thought the coat was hideous at first, it has grown on me. J oseph and my mom convinced me that I shouldn't crimp her style.
I don't think she removed the coat for the rest of the weekend, except to bathe, and of course at the reception when we told her she had to give her new dress equal showing time.
When Aaron did finally wake up, he was all smiles, even with dried, cracked lips. (That darn dry Utah climate). We could have given him a single book for Christmas and he would have been thrilled.
He proudly donned this back pack from Joe's mom all morning. It was mini and super cute! I spent the morning trying to undo all of the crazy packaging jobs they do now days.
Joseph is always a wonderful gift-giver. This year he did some nice "things" for me and I was/am very grateful for his thoughtfulness, but the best gift of all came as a complete surprise. He always writes a letter for gift-giving holidays. This year he did another sweet letter and wrapped it up nicely for me to open. I read the letter that expressed his love and appreciation...specifically his appreciation for my conservative style and my determination to pay off debt.
I read the letter and told him thanks, but I didn't realize there was more. He then told me to look under the tissue paper. As I lifted it my jaw dropped and I started to cry as I hurried to him for a hug. We hugged and cried together. We set a goal last year to have the private loan debt from law school paid off in the first half of 2009. We made some significant progress last year, but we weren't quite sure if we would really be able to do it. Well under the tissue paper was a check to pay off significantly more of that debt. We 're going to meet that goal after all! It has been so unifying to work hard and sacrifice together to reach it. He knows me so well, a gift of paying off our private loans is one of the best gifts he could give. Our hearts were/are full of gratitude to our Heavenly Father for rewarding our efforts.

Of course, my brother Wade lightened up the moment by saying, "Gee Clark, you shouldn't have..."
It was a great and busy day filled with lots of family, and the evening kicked off the wedding celebrations of the weekend!

Holy cow what a busy holiday! It looks like it was amazing, and I love the new family picture. It's just beautiful!!
I am with you on Brynn's coat. But she sure does look cute.
Congrats! on your debt free life. Will you give me some pointers? I feel like we'll NEVER get there.
I have to agree with you about the packaging of toys. I think I spent more time un twisting ties and clipping plastic security tabs then I care to admit.
I am glad you had a Merry Christmas and I absolutely love the new headliner picture from Emily's wedding. It is such a flattering picture of all of you.
Congratulations on paying off your loans. What a great feeling I'm sure. I just started scrapbooking my 2008 pictures and I've been working on our trip to Trinidad in February for the run and the trip to Tahoe. You have such a wonderful family and I'm glad we had that time together.
Kristina, I wish it meant we had a debt free life!;) Half of our law loans were private, so we still have the federal ones to pay off before having a totally debt-free life! :)
Karen, I miss you too! We were just talking about our trip to Tahoe and to Trinidad last week. I LOVED both trips, Joe decided last week that we are both going to do the Trinidad race next year. I don't know what he thinks about childcare...you two may have to run it together. As for me, I need to get running again. It's been too long!
Joe wants to go to the North Face outlet in Berkeley soon, so I may call you to see if we can come for a visit.
What a busy, busy holiday you had! I know it is your sheer determination to document and journal that bring us these posts...
I can't wait to hear about the wedding. I heard it was wonderful... sad we didn't make it to the reception, but we got in late, late, late that night!
And we would have loved to be there for the baby blessing... but had 2 other family baby blessings the same day. What a wonderfully busy time!
Cute Brynn and her coat. I can tell she feels special in it... that is what matters on Christmas. And I'm glad Joseph gets the credit.
And I'd love to know where you got the matching dolls/pjs.
Okay, I have so so so much to comment on!
First of all - I agree with Joe - you HAD to get that coat. I will tell you what I learned from an angry mom at my kids' school when someone was wearing a Baby Phat coat. Apparently the kitten on it is a sex kitten. I was like the last person on earth to know that. Well, maybe not quite. But there is quite the uproar about whether or not that is appropriate for her kids' line. I didn't know. Maybe I shouldn't have told you. But that coat is FABULOUS!! Really. Really. Really. Fabulous! And you guys totally should have the credit for it. Larry and I take the credit for all the really great gifts.
So you guys don't wrap Santa gifts? Larry's family didn't either. We do (and I did) but it seems like such a waste. On the other hand, it is part of our tradition to watch each other open them.
What a great carebear blankie! I love the visual of you and Joe tying the quilt. I love that it is a family gift. She will cherish it always.
About the packing - seriously. What is that about? I almost broke a pair of scissors and I just think of all these poor 6 year olds in Vietnam who are putting the packages together (okay, it's probably a machine but still) and it is not humanly possible to open them. Then I am picking wires out of the vacuum for the next month.
I love that you are doing the provident living and getting out of debt! Way to go! That is so fabulous! Congratulations! (I must admit to being a little jealous - I am not very good at that.)
Last of all (I think) a good "Christmas Vacation" joke goes a long way. That movie is priceless. We bought it edited a few years back and what it over and over and OVER at Christmas time. We LOVE it.
I just looked at your weather and it said it was 42*. It's been 51* here all day long. LOTS and LOTS of water everywhere.
AND (you knew I couldn't be done with just one comment - right?) you look so fabulous! Totally unbelievable that you have a new baby. Snaps to you.
Tifani, that is AWFUL about the cat. See I told you I know nothing about pop culture...and evidently Joseph doesn't know enough to keep us out of trouble!
I have some serious unpicking to do!
Your weather made national news! We heard all about record snowfall in Spokane last night on our local news. I'll bet you have tons of water!
oh and tifani, no wonder the coat was marked down from 150 to 30. There's a reason things get marked down that much, and here i thought it was because it was ugly!
Sari saw that coat and FELL IN LOVE. You'll have to tell me where you got it so I can see if they have one in her size. After I unpick it of course.
The snow is seriously crazy here, but now it is melting. We have puddles big enough to lose a Honda in!
I just remembered while I was reading this that at Costco I almost got some glasses that had the babyphat kitty on the side but decided against them. Later, when I learned what it was, I was like, Whew! Barely escaped that one!
I love your new family photo you have at the top of your blog, you have such a beautiful family! Also a late Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. Your Christmas looked like a lot of fun with lots of family!
I read the second entry before this one, of course, but I have to admit: I'd let Bryn wear the coat wherever she wanted if she were my daughter. I'd struggle with it, as you did, wrestle with what it stands for. I'd learn a lesson for having purchased something without being familiar with it. But logically I don't think anyone is going to take a second look at it, or think Bryn is pretty hot and tempting, or think her a part of any gangsta lifestyle because of the coat. Sometimes, despite what the designer's paradigm is, a coat is just a coat.
So you can see, as a mother I'm not a very advanced organism. Sigh.
