While making dinner the other night Abby popped into the kitchen with this suggestion:
Mom, you should start saving your money.
We do Abby. When daddy gets paid we take part of that money and save for the future and for emergencies.
Well Mom, when dad gets paid you should save your money so that you can buy cool stuff for your kids.
Someday she'll realize, that's exactly where most of the rest of the money goes, evidently, I'm not buying the"cool" stuff though ....made me smile.
On a seperate occasion, while shopping at Target, I told Brynn "no" when she asked for something she wanted. She looked up at me with a scowl and said, "Why do you get to buy everything you want when we go to the store, but we never get to buy anything that we want?"
I asked her, "What do I buy that I want?"
She replied, "Like paper towels, and soap, and toothepaste...."
"Ya, Brynn, you're right, that's EVERYTHING that I want."

That is funny. It's every woman's dream to have all the paper towels and toothpaste she needs. Wow! If that were only the case.
You are so greedy. I mean, toothpaste? Papertowels.... You should think stop thinking about yourself. geez. How funny of her to say that! I love it! Little kids are the best.
I love the logic behind these conversations. Glad you wrote them down... they'll appreciate it when they're moms.
Very funny! I love that these conversations.
We just went to our Stake's Parenting Seminar and Larry and I took a class on teaching kids about money and the upshot was, don't buy your kids stuff just because. He had a whole theory behind it and it was really, very good.
We just spent about two grand on car repairs and Ben said, "I can't believe that you fixed the cars when that money could have gone to getting me a new tooth!" (He knocked out his permanent tooth years ago and has a flipper that has a fake tooth, he needs a bone graft, and tons of work, it will be about six grand.) The thing is, he was TOTALLY serious. I said, "Can Dad drive your tooth to work Ben? No? Okay then."
I love the moments when we get to see the world the way our kids do. If only it were that easy and our only wants were paper towels. That would make budgeting so much easier.
Those are the same conversations we have everyday! As if they are doing us favors by letting us know how to run things. And I wish I was RICH so I could afford endless amounts of toothpaste!
Oh my gosh Amy, I SERIOUSLY had the EXACT same Target conversation just a few days ago with my kindergartener. I totally laughed because I could copy and paste this one into my blog and change the names. You're so good to record those things! Someday her kids will say that to her, and you'll pull this out and laugh. :-)
I always get so excited when I get to buy myself paper towels! I anticipate it all week. ;)
