Christmas

December 24, 4:30 PM Grandma and Grandpa and Emily arrived safely! After spending a couple of days celebrating Christmas (and attending the BYU win) with the St. George crew, my family made the long drive to Woodland. I was finishing up some last minute grocery shopping at the Nugget in Davis when I received the phone call that they were within minutes of our home. They beat me there! When I arrived the kids were ecstatic, they couldn't stop screaming and yelling! There was alot of joyful noise echoing through the house!

Aaron went in for his usual cuddle with Grandpa. He seriously loves this guy. They spent lots of time together Aaron's first year of life. They don't see one another very often, but Aaron always remembers him and it is as if they have never been apart.

Mom of course jumped right in and got down to business. She wanted to make gingerbread houses with our kids....and for anyone who knows my mom, she never takes shortcuts. She didn't use graham crackers and frosting....she made REAL gingerbread and REAL gingerbread house icing (I call it edible glue). They put the houses together on Christmas Day.

Abby's Birthday Surprises!

They brought Abby's birthday presents with them, she felt totally loved and taken care of. So much in fact that Abby said, "Mom, Santa doesn't need to bring me anything.....Grandma and Grandpa brought me EVERYTHING that I asked him for!" I love that little girl so much!

Aaron took full part in all of the excitement and joyful noises. He was such a character!

A little R&R on Christmas Eve. (Hmmm...maybe this late nap explains his later behavior!)
Getting ready for Christmas Eve dinner. We broke from tradition since we weren't sure when mom and dad were going to arrive. We made the usual ham dinner for Christmas day and had clam chowder and sourdough bread for Christmas Eve. We finished off with fresh apple cake butter rum sauce and vanilla bean ice cream. YUM! It was fun to pull out our China. We really don't use it very often, but I need to make more of an effort to do so. It's fun to eat on the nice stuff once in a while. I remember begrudgingly getting it when I got married, telling my mom I wouldn't be using it anytime soon. Now.... I'm glad, it isn't something I would spend money on right now, so I'm glad I already have it.
After dinner we watched the Nativity and then read a Christmas Story and watched some home videos and reminisced about Christmas' past.... The girls fell asleep on the couch so Joseph carried them to bed. Aaron was a little night hawk and actually stayed up to watch Santa work his magic. He played with his new Christmas toy as we put it together. Hopefully his memory isn't too sharp yet! We finally put him in his crib at 1:30 AM, but I think he would have pulled an all nighter if we had allowed. Santa had lots of work to do. He mangaged to get a few things all out and set up and then asked us to put the rest together later, so he could make his next stop :o) !
Aaron teasing his favorite guy!

We didn't take many still shots of Christmas morning. We were all caught up in the excitement of it all. Hopefully we caught some on video...hmmm!
We were very pleased with our Greg Olsen canvas of The Gentle Healer. This picture brings me such a peaceful feeling when I look at it. It will be a nice addition to our home and I am sure will help us to remember the source of our happiness and peace. Thanks mom and dad... for this and for all the other kind gifts. (This is us in all our Christmas glory... aka- exhaustion. I can't remember if I changed my clothes and put them back on after bed, or if they ever came off, we were spent, as you can tell!) While everyone was enjoying the presents, Emily and I whipped together our Christmas Morning Quiche, gnochies, fresh fruit and juice. This year I tried a couple new quiche recipes and they were fantastic! Emily made the traditional whole wheat crust the night before. She does the BEST pie shells. It was fun to work with her on the meal. Normally we have homemade cinnamon rolls, but after our late night, the last thing I wanted to do was make roll dough. Mom did it later that afternoon. They were the best and gooey-est ever! We enjoyed an abundance of good food. It really felt like a celebration!

Truthfully, after doing Christmas at my house. I am amazed at how organized my mom is every Christmas. She does a formal Christmas dinner with a wide variety of tasty homemade dishes, including homemade rolls, and then she turns around and puts on a formal Christmas brunch with gourmet food and homemade rolls on Christmas day. She always seems to have everything running so smoothly. (Mom, you have to tell me how you managed that all when Santa needed help too! You're energy amazes me more and more every year I am alive!) I felt sort of sleep deprived and scrambled...but we survived! I guess I'll get better at organizing it all and knowing what order to do everything as time goes on!

Christmas Day-Abby and Emily working on their masterpieces.

Grandma and Brynn with their's.
Santa's helper taking a much needed nap. We were up until 3:30 a.m. helping Santa with his surprises. It was fun working together to create a little magic for our little family! Experiencing life with your best friend is so fun! Together, creating life's experiences for your children is the best!
Aaron has this funny thing he does with my dad. He puts his hand up, like some Star Trek sign and holds it there until my dad puts his up in the same fashion. It's so funny because it's so consistent.

Aaron and his little elf!

The finished product!
Abby's masterpiece!
This is what we were putting together until 3:30 AM. We were about to help Santa put the trampoline up, but decided it was too late and too cold. My mom, bless her heart, worked so hard to put the track and all the stuff together and Aaron kept sitting on it. Every time she walked into the room during the week, she would rebuild it, I kept telling her to leave it, because it would keep getting messes up, but she insisted on fixing it everytime. As we were putting it all together, I said to my mom....."Okay, this is Aaron's present, but I wonder how long it will take until the princesses take over the station?" Look below and see for yourself.
Yes, less than one day and princesses were found all over the tracks, towers, and railroad cars. It was pretty funny. It's a good thing we are consecrated in this house!
That's it for the pictures with my camera. I'll have to add more pictures and more about our Christmas Eve festivities and Christmas week when I get a hold of Joseph's camera ( and a little more time).

But a couple of funnies to record before I end.....

As we were getting things ready, we set up some foam pads for the kids to sleep on (I think dad ended up sleeping on it though). When our guests arrived Abby ran in and said, 'Come on you guys come and look at the head foams (we think she was thinking headphones) for us to sleep on!" Tonight she said, "Dad, I want the head foams in my room." We started laughing and she then called them the "bone heads", before she got it down that they were foam pads. She is a nut!

The kids have been referring to their Christmas stockings as "beanstalks." We have no clue where they got this, other than the "stalk" and "stock." ??????

While we were shopping with everyone at the Vacaville Outlets, the kids were hungry so I got them a Subway to share. Abby spilled some of her water on herself. She hates it when she or anyone else spills water on her. If I even touch her with wet hands she has to go change her clothes. Anyway, when I wasn't looking, she took off her rooskies and put them by the car heater to let them dry. We all went into Gap to find her some jeans. When we went to try them on, she couldn't because she didn't have her rooskies on so we watched Brynn try some clothes on. My mom and I were talking when all of the sudden Abby lifted up her skirt and started shaking her bare booty in the mirror to the music playing overhead. I was mortified! But at the same time, we couldn't help but laugh. This little girl has me in stitches daily!

Some memories I want to remember.....the purse "situation"....."Grandpa, how much were these french fries? I think you should take them back!" ....shopping....running....belting High School Musical into the karaoke....more shopping.....eating delicious food.....talking.....staying up way too late....watching reruns of the Office every night and laughing until we cried.....Abby's huge bump from trying to get off the tramp....BJ's Brewery and Grill....more shopping.....Abby's booty dancing.....talking one on one with my Dad.....talking with Mom and Emily....seeing my kids love and be loved by my parents.....seeing Joe get excited about the gourmet waffle iron from Mom and Dad....seeing Mom put the train together over and over again..... seeing Aaron take it apart again and again.....time to just be together, doing nothing but that! Thanks for everything!

Joseph, Amy and Family! Thank you again for such a wonderful holiday celebration. We already miss the giggles and pitter patter of tiny feet. We even miss the sticky hands and faces.
Thanks Joe for taking us to your facility to witness firsthand a few of the many challenges and opportunities that you are deal with. We are so grateful that the facility did not burn down on Christmas Eve so that everyone was safe and we could all spend time together. Your love and enthusiasm carried us all the way back home to Spanish Fork. Amy thanks for being such a wonderful hostess and making our Christmas this year wonderful with all of our memorable traditions. Your were so organized and had your home filled with so much love and warmth. We love you guys so much and value the quality time we spent together. We are also grateful that our prayers were answered in Abby's behalf after her bump on the head. We are grateful for your tender care of our grandchildren and look forward to many more times with all of you together. Until then keep up the great work and we'll see you soon! We love you!

Thanks mom! The bump is shrinking and she hasn't really complained except for when I forget about it while combing her hair. This afternoon while I was cleaning the kitchen, I looked outside to see her trying to get Aaron off the tramp. I'm not quite sure how he got up there. We had a little chat about making sure mom is aware that they are jumping. I may have to put a lock on the zipper of the net to remind them to ask me. Other than that they have been pretty safe while jumping. Thanks for everything! Love, Amy

And I think that I may need to have you email me some pictures. I really didn't take much. I need to take a look at Joe's camera, I think we took a few more with his.

We are still trying to figure out where the painting you gave us will look best. I think we've settled on the room...but we're trying to decide the mantle or behind the couch???? Call me!

What a party! I loved all the photos. Your Christmas breakfast was impressive. I can't believe you made all that and then had homemade cinnamon rolls later in the day. Wow! I don't know if I would have had the energy for it all.

I am so glad your parents and Emily were there to celebrate the holiday with you. You can tell by you kids faces that they loved every moment.

I love your Greg Olson painting. I gave the same one to Rich for Christmas last year. It's lovely.

Happy New Year!

Paul, I didn't know you ran into each other. He is very fun and kind. How lucky to have the BYU bowl kick off (pun intended) your Christmas festivities. I'm glad you guys were able to start the holiday with a win...I'm sure it made your Christmas all the merrier!

Wow! You were really organized and the food looked like it belonged on the cover of a magazine. I'm glad you had so much fun with your family. We just got back from visiting with my mom and dad and I am pooped! But we had a blast!

Looks like you had a fantabulous time! It's so fun to read about other's traditions and the funny things their kids say - they're different, but similiar to our own little kids and I just love it. Did I tell you before that you motivated me to buy stockings this year? Well, I don't know if you got the tree skirt, too, but PBK has one that matches the stockings clearanced now for a good price. I just got one for next year.

Happy holidays and keep the smiles coming!

Joe and Amy said...

Laura, I think I remember you telling me that you did. I was in the same frame of mind that you were...to just wait until we had everyone here....but then Joe put his foot down and told me that this family needed stockings. I did buy a tree skirt earlier, but I waited to buy the "just in case" stockings until after Christmas, luckily I found what I was looking for, and for a great deal. I'm not sure what your tree looks like, but the regular PB store has some cute bulbs that look really cute with the stockings (I think so anyway). We bought a few of those when they went on sale. Our tree is a hodge podge of different things, so they should work. We purchased them in the store though, I'm not sure what they have online. Is there a PB or PBK in Utah? Probably somewhere in Salt Lake????? After reading your post today, Joe and I have been talking tonight about taking the kids to Tahoe for a ski lesson. Abby's 4 (but pretty coordinated) do you think she could do it? We just need to find a babysitter for Aaron.

Your rope tow comment made me laugh. When I went snowboarding with Joe right after we got married, he took me up the rope tow to practice on the mini-hill at Sundance, I fell, couldn't get up, and did't let go of the rope (or maybe I was caught in it), so it was dragging me up the hill. he kept laughing and telling me to let go, but somehow I just couldn't get out of the rope. I have never been so sore in my life. I think skiing is much easier, and thus more enjoyable. He's excited to try it out. He's snow boarded for years, but has NEVER tried skiing.

Wow that was a long comment.

funny that you tell a story about snowboarding for the first time amy. the first thing i remember after blacking out from a fall on my first snowboarding trip at sundance in seventh grade was you up on the lift waving and laughing at me on the ground next to jake fish.

i took amy snowboarding for her first time before michael was born and she took a hard spill towards the bottom of a pretty icy hard hill. it drew tears from her and while she got up to try again...we haven't been snowboarding together since...

Amy, about skiing - Isabel turns 4 next week, but we took her anyway because she's rather strong and coordinated, too. Possibly moreso than her brother, but don't tell him. Besides, kids here under 6 ski free a lot of places, so it was cheaper, too! Anyway, I would definitely do lessons, even if it's just a half day, then plan on going REALLY slowly and stopping for cocoa every time someone is cold or tired. Izzie was really the funniest. She really didn't "get" the pizza shape with her skis, even with an edgie wedgie attached to the tips. But she LOVED going down the hill - totally fearless. It took everything I had to make her wait for me so we could go down together, because she was so anxious to get going! And she spent by far the most time face-down in the snow. It was tiring, and sometimes while we were there I wondered if I was just crazy, but I seriously laughed all the way home and am looking forward to going again! Email me if you want - I'm hardly an expert here, but I feel like we learned a lot!

Sounds like you had a wonderful Christmas. It's a great time to be around family. I love the picture of the Savior. What a great gift!

Thanks Laura...I'll email you with any questions. We've been hit with a winter storm here. It doesn't snow where we are...just rains... but the pass in Tahoe looks pretty bad, so I don't think we'll be going anytime soon.

Paul, I vividly remember sitting with Amber on the ski lift. You are right we were laughing at you. (sorry) I think we even skiied down the hill past you a couple of times rolling our eyes....I thought you had just tried to be macho on a jump and were suffering a broken binding....you were awake and alert, so I didn't think "concussion." We felt really bad when the first aid guy came to take you down the mountain...that's when we knew Jake wasn't kidding when he said you had really had an accident...(Amber and I had a history with Jake's teasing :) ). We tried to make it up to you by coming to see you in the first aid room...I think that's when your dad came to get you. That was very mean of us....I'm glad you didn't suffer any permanent damage. :o)

Does Amy ski? How far away are you from Big Bear...ever tried winter sports up there?

I love the Christmas Breakfast. It looks Divine. I am sure you were an excellent hostess Amy. It's so fun that you family came to you for Christmas. I love reading your blog. You inspire me to be better at everything. I want to be just like you when I grow up.

Kristina, I love that you said that- I feel the same way! I want to be just like Amy when I grow up too!

Amy-I actually found both of those outfits for the kids at wal-mart, I normally just buy playclothes that I don't care about at walmart...that way when a shirt or shorts get ruined, I am only out 4 dollars. I loved the dress because it wasn't so christmasey that Emma could wear it for the rest of the winter season. I don't know if it's just me, but I really hate buying church clothes...they sit in their closet 6 days out of the week and then they grow so darn quickly that it just seems more trouble than it's worth...(don't get me started with the shoes!) There really was a means to my rant there...I look for the cheapest alternatives for church clothes-Walmart does great because they put these sets together for christmas and easter...usually between 13-20 for everything: pants, shirt, tie, vest or sweater...sometimes hat for the babies...I noticed Target had a few last Easter too. Sometimes the sets are not that good looking, but this year they were nice.

Just popped over and enjoyed seeing your wonderful Christmas.

p.s. It is SOOO worth your time to glue and nail the Thomas train set together. We did it with our boys 3 years ago when they got it for Christmas and it has made it a fun toy for years instead of a "peices headache".

Joe and Amy said...

Ditto to the both of you Kristina and Stephanie....I just wake up each day happy that I survived the one before. :)

Marcie, thanks for the tip, I tried wood and supergule the other day, and couldn't get it to quite work perfectly. Miraculously though, the set has stayed together for about 4 days since the last time I put it back together. I talked to the clerk at Barnes and Noble to see exaclty what they did, and she gave me some good tips as well. I enjoyed your ideas on the tuesday tell all page. I didn't post thinking that nothing I do is that out of the ordinary, but it's fun to see some similar ideas here and there. I like the car idea, I am constantly telling my husband I need another "me" to unload the stuff while I unload all of the kids from the van. I have to remind myself often that work is an eternal principle and housework is literally eternal, it never ends, you just have to keep on keeping on and find something enjoybable about it each day so you don't go insane! :)

the other vivid snowboarding memory from that day was the embarrassment i felt for having to wear that stupid oxygen thing in my nose. i was too happy with my pops for making me leave for the day after the concussion...but it's the advice i gave to a concussion patient earlier tonight.

and life comes full circle.

how is jake lately? i heard he's in a band? has anyone heard them play?
