If there is any doubt that Joseph could be chosen for Father of the Year, let it be put to rest. Joseph took the kids on a campout last week and they all had a wonderful time. They left Friday night and ate army meals for dinner. The kids didn't think they were too great, but they survived.
Isaac and I stayed home, but after looking through pictures and hearing of their adventures, I think we really missed out! Next time......
Now, here is the part that amazed me. Joseph told me that we was going to take the kids on a little hike. Anyone who knows him, knows how tenacious he is, and how, shall we say, over-the-top, he can be. He took the kids on a 5 mile hike up to Lake Berryessa. I think that would exhaust an active adult, I think he might be half crazy to take 3 children on it. They were exhausted, but felt quite proud of their accomplishment. He said it was a neat experience to see their toughness and to help them accomplish something hard. I am very proud of all of them. The Monday after the hike, I asked them if they wanted to go on a little hike (more of a walk) to the duck pond at the UC Davis Arboretum. They all chimed in "NOOOO! Not another hike, we are still tired from the last one!"
I'm glad they had the chance to get out and experience the beauty in nature. I was grateful for the break. I thought of all the fun things I could do with just Isaac, but we ended up staying home and relaxing and going to bed early and then waking up to watch conference all day Saturday. It was simple and blissful. I've loved looking at the beautiful green hills. Spring in Northern California is so green and beautiful. Soon it will be golden, which is beautiful in it's own way, but we are enjoying this season!

Joe totally cracks me up. Those kids are going to have SO many fond memories of their tenacious dad. I love the pictures and think they are so cute. I am glad you had a well deserved break. Only in California can you camp out in the Spring, everywhere else it's too cold.
What a great experience to have with just dad. You know I had a similar experience this weekend too and I had pangs of guilt that I should have been there with them, but then I thought that was just silly. I get to experience so many firsts here at home with them all day and Dad needs that experience too. They all do. They need to have firsts without mom around Dad needs to have those rewarding experiences with his kids too. I felt much better after that AHA moment!!! :) Those photos look amazing and make me miss the beauty of Spring in Northern Cali.
holy cow! 5 miles! way to go kiddos! our young women wouldn't even go on a hike that long! awesome job! what a fun time to spend with joe... what a great father! such great memories for them. and glad that you were able to relax and enjoy time with little issac. love him...
Really great pictures and a fabulous trip! I am so glad that you got a little sleep time! (I always make big plans on the rare occasion that Larry is gone and end up sleeping.) Joe and my mom are a lot the same with the hike distance estimation. We went on a "walk" down at Lake Powell that was about 6 miles, but we had planned on 1 1/2 round trip. When grandma says, "let's check out this canyon" the kids say, "can we bring a lunch this time?" lol
Camping looked like so much fun!
I just finished reading your post about your stressful day and had to tell you it was so nice to hear that I'm not alone in my frustrations. And I only have 1 toddler to deal with so I shouldn't be complaining, but it's been really hard to be "gentle & loving" lately. Thanks for some uplifting thoughts like "I can do hard things" I needed to hear that today!
Awesome. The Lees are definitely campers, aren't they? Looks like they had a marvelous time!
So fun. What a great grand view... both from Joe about what the kids can do, and the view from the top of the hike!
And so nice for you, Amy, to have a little R&R...
I have been to Lake Barryessa too! I swear I've been where those pictures are taken, or right near there! We did lots of camping and hiking as youth in the Sierras. I feel connected to my childhood seeing those pictures. Northern CA is a great place. Oh, and WOW that he took them camping. That's totally amazing!
