Swimming

Isaac is a pure delight to have in our family.  He did his first swimming lessons this year (he did mommy and me last year).  He was so excited to do everything.  It was entertainment every single day that we went.  Debbie kept warning us to put a life jacket on him whenever we were near water because he has NO FEAR!

Swimming Lessons

Our final session of swimming lessons ends tomorrow. It's been a great summer of swimming, but I am excited to be done. Because we do the lessons at a private pool, I can't get them all back to back, so much of our summer has revolved around the lessons. This session I was able to plead with her to put Brynn and Abby in at the same time so we had to go at 9 a.m. for them, 11 a.m. for Isaac (with me) and 12 p.m. for Aaron. It literally takes up half of our day, but the kids have improved a ton. Brynn already has a very pretty stroke, but Abby has really improved her stroke and breathing and has become a beautiful swimmer. Aaron has become so much more comfortable in the water. I can see him gaining confidence and I LOVE it! We'll still have to work with him to get him safe in the water, but it's coming. He is a totally different boy than he was at the beginning of the summer. I am so proud of him. It's been great watching him grow in this way. To think that the boy who started our screaming as I dropped him off board, would move to jumping by himself (but nearly on top of the teacher), to now jumping as far off as he can (and almost make it to the side alone), has been pretty amazing! I've never signed up for "Mommy and Me" with any of my kids. I am WSI certified and so I've always thought it was a waste of money to pay to have someone teach me how to teach my child, and I've also always had a smaller baby to take care of, but this year I couldn't make Isaac watch the kids and not get in, so I signed up for a "Mommy and Me" with him. I have had so much fun and I've really learned alot. Debbie does a different program than American Red Cross and I think it's really effective. She even had all of the moms brush up on CPR with her dummies. It was a great reminder. I'm really glad we did it.

Swimming Lessons~Aaron and Boston

During Aaron's third session of swimming lessons, he and his cousin Boston got to swim together. This was definitely the easiest session to get Aaron to go to because Boston was there.

Aaron has come along way since the beginning of swimming lessons. I had to drop him off the board at the beginning, and now he jumps off alone. He still has a little more to learn before he can swim, but he's made so much progress and we are very proud of him.

Swimming Lessons Session 1

We completed session one of our swimming lessons with Miss Debbie. We didn't sign up in time to get private lessons, but lucky for us we were able to get signed up in time for regular lessons. Miss Debbie's classes fill up fast because she does so well with the kids. The girls are very comfortable in the water, and Aaron loves the water, but isn't as comfortable "swimming." This summer we've consigned ourselves to finding a home and getting Aaron swimming! With four sessions of lessons lined up, we are hoping to get there! Isaac is my little buddy during lessons, he's too small to take a regular class, but I've signed him up for a mommy and me to give him a chance in the water, instead of always having to sit on the sidelines. Debbie has a playground and an in-ground trampoline, so there's plenty to do for little Isaac while the other's swim. I love water and swimming and I hope my kids will first learn to be safe in the water and second learn to enjoy the water. (I think we've got that second part down.)

By the last day I was able to get Aaron in to walk to the end of the board and jump or inch off I should say. His anxiety took over every time and we had to do some mental coaching to get him to jump. Every other day I had to drop him off. I can't wait for the day when we can really swim! Teaching swimming lessons when I was young was hard work, but also very rewarding. I have many memories of kids who were on the brink of really learning to swim. I LOVED watching them make it across the pool for the first time. It made me cry somedays. I can't wait to see Aaron make it across the pool for the first time.

Swimming Lessons

We finished another year at Morley's Swim School before we left for our trip to Utah. The kids did a great job and they all made great progress this year. Before Aaron started swimming lessons he wouldn't even put his face in the water. By the time he was finished at Morley's he was gliding to the wall. He was so cute every time he went in and came out of the water. He would go down with a huge grin on his face and then come up with the same grin and every time he would wipe the water out of his eyes. He was totally consistent. It was so funny to watch. He loved every second of it, I think it helped he had a cute teacher. He loved it all, except for one particular day. I forgot to put his swim suit in the car and so he had to wear his shorts. He didn't notice until a couple minutes into the lesson and then he totally lost it. He cried and cried and cried about his shorts getting wet. I felt so bad, but hey a kid's got to learn to deal with disappointment, right? It was quite the ordeal, but he got through it.

He went off of the diving board this year too! We were so proud of him. Joseph works just a couple blocks away from Morley's so he was able to stop by a few of the days.

Abby became a dolphin this year. She really improved her stroke and made great progress with her side breathing. She begged me to let her join the swim team. Maybe next year. Between the ballet production and our family trips, it was hard to commit to the team this year. We are very proud of Abby. She's very comfortable in the water and that makes things pretty fun!
Brynn did awesome again this year and I think she really needs to start swim team to move it to the next level. Her strokes are very smooth and pretty, but she needs a bigger pool to work on the endurance. She got frustrated a couple of times this year because of the butterfly stroke and diving. She told us it's hard to get her shoulders out of the water when she's doing the butterfly. She does awesome and performs the stroke a million times better than I can. Sometimes she's a little hard on herself.
Joseph commented on her diving one day, telling her to spring a little more and to let her head fall in the water first to avoid the slapping of the legs or belly. She went home and spent 30 minutes crying in her bedroom. When I finally figured out what was going on, she told me what had happened. "When Dad tells me what to do, it makes me think that he didn't think I did a good job!" She and I had a discussion about how we all have room for improvement, none of us are perfect. Joseph and I had a discussion about letting the swim instructor correct things for now. Like I said before, I think a child has to learn to deal with disappointment....but we as parents also need to make sure we put deposits into her emotional bank account and we also need to emphasize that our love for her is not based upon her performance. I think sometimes when we compliment or criticize too much, we place too much value on performance. We've been trying to help the kids recognize that how they feel about what they've done and having fun is what's most important. Anyway, they all had lots of fun. Now we've just got to get some more use out of our summer swim pass! This summer has flown by!
I love being on this side of the swimming lessons. I remember teaching swimming lesson for many years as a teen/young adult. I always watched the mom's bringing their kids to swimming lessons. I envied them. Now, it's my turn and I am loving every second of it. I love watching them, cheering them on and then wrapping them in a nice dry towel when it's all over. While it's not quite as glamorous or as easy as I imaginedit would be, this mothering gig is quite satisfying. I love it!
